Alhama de Granada is an old town, located about 1.5 hours drive from Malaga, and about 1 hour from Granada in the south of Spain. The town is built on the side of a gorge, which for many years has provided water, shade and protection to the town. The town has origins at least as far back as Roman times – there is a roman bridge across the river just outside town, and also has significant Moorish and Catholic architecture.
The town is ideal for wandering around to explore the old buildings and see the sights. It has a really non-touristy feel although there is clearly a significant British ex-pat community in the surrounding areas.
The town has a good tourist information office in the top square, which can provide a map and point out most of the points of interest.
A short distance outside of town is a thermal baths, where there is a hotel and spa, or some concrete pools by the river where you can bathe for free. Having a warm bath in the dappled shade beneath tall trees was really peaceful, although the sulphur smell can be strong at times!
