Perthshire is known as Big Tree Country and with good reason. The area covers more than 200,000 acres of woodland, has some of the oldest and tallest trees in the country and has some great trails for family walks. Needless to say, it’s a beautiful place to visit at any time of year, but it is during Autumn that the views become even more spectacular.
Here are a few of our favourite things to do in Perthshire:
Loch Tummel:
On a clear, still autumnal day, there is no better way to see the vast array of colours than on Loch Tummel. Get in close to the dam and canoe up past Queens View (remembering to shout a bit to create echos) towards a few little islands you can get out and explore on and have a picnic. There are also walks nearby where you can stretch your legs, our favourite being The Hermitage.
The Enchanted Forest:
When we first moved to Perthshire a few years ago, this quickly became a firm family favourite. An evening at a light and sound show, with original music, story telling yurts and a fire to roast marshmallows. Tickets sell out fast, but if you can manage to get them, it’s well worth it! Listening to the Deer Rut:
Hearing the loud and deep bellowing of deer high up on the hills, echoing around you is sure to leave an impression. For us, we love it, as our son rushes to find binoculars to try to spot them. It reminds us of time we’ve spent outdoors in the middle of nowhere wildcamping, either having spent the day munrobagging or, on one occasion, sleeping in a cave, with the deers keeping us up all night while our son slept through. We heard them recently near Loch Rannoch on a weekend away in the campervan.
We’re looking forward to getting outdoors and spending as much time as we can together. Not forgetting the promise of early snow too… but that’s for another time.
